Basics of a Successful Adoption Program

It is the responsibility of the animal shelter to seek permanent, responsible homes for the adoptable animals placed in their custody. To that end, shelters need to formulate written policies and guidelines that will be followed when processing adoptions.

While the majority of adoption guidelines are in fact just that, they are still items that must be considered prior to making an adoption decision. It is not effective to rely solely on the individual discretion of the adoption counselor.

It is impossible to act in the best interest of the animals if there are no guidelines. Animals should not be adopted just to prevent euthanasia or haphazardly without forethought of the animal's welfare.

Weekly Report from Petfinder

Dear Petfinder.com members,

Your pets are the cover story on not one, but TWO great publications this month – the BARK magazine and Best Friends Magazine, which is celebrating its 25th Anniversary.

Best Friends Magazine, published by our friends at Best Friends Animal Society, proudly exclaims “The Power of Petfinder” and provides a nice 4 page spread on Petfinder, including our history, milestones and a couple of Happy Tails sure to send readers searching for their own purrrr-fect match. An abbreviated version of the magazine piece is online at http://www.bestfriends.org/allthegoodnews/ where you can also subscribe.

The Bark Magazine (with its “Dog is my co-pilot” tagline I like so much) features a fabulous photo of Lola, Editor Claudia Kawczynka’s Petfinder adoptee. She bears the label “Oh Lucky Dog!” and the cover tells the world that she is “One of 6.5 million dogs who found a home on Petfinder.com”. The Bark, in addition to being extremely well-written, is very shelter and rescue dog friendly. This theme runs from the Editor’s Note to adopt-me ads for individual pets and continues in many of their features. For more info or to subscribe, visit http://thebark.com

Happy New Year! This is just the start to all the great things in store for you and your adoptable pets this year. Have a great adoption week. --K
